Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the behaviour of the most frequent focalisation devices found in the discourse of Chilean public speech. For this purpose, a sample of the corpus of the research project Fondecyt Nº 1030953 corresponding to male and female subjects of three age groups belonging to the Northern, Central, Southern and Metropolitan and Valparaíso zones was analyzed.  The corpus was traced looking for the resources that the speakers use to emphasize or to make certain segments of their messages prominent. The study was based on the categories proposed by Gutiérrez (1997). The results reveal that the most frequently used procedures are order, special syntactic structures and presupposition focalising devices.
