Abstract

Horace´s Ars Poetica has been interpreted in many ways, but it is important to consider its epistolary style, which sets it apart from the philosophical essay and from the free-style satyre. This study proposes that Ars Poetica is articulated upon a fundamental notion, that of form, from which the concepts of ‘thematic matter’ and ‘action’ emerge, especially epic and drama. The relevance given to art, on the other hand, is explained by the fact that ars is somehow the form that shapes the real poet.
