Abstract

In this paper, we examine some semantic, syntactic and pragmatic motivations that may

influence the preferred order of the Spanish temporal adjuncts antes ‘before’ and después

‘after’, when they function as bare adverbs, as adverbial phrases, and as linkage markers in

subordinate clauses. The study of narrative texts reveals that these sequential adjuncts respond

differently to each of the motivations under study
