This paper reports on an activity carried out with upper advanced learners to help them raise word meaning awareness and eventually expand their active vocabulary. The activity here described introduces learners to the study of word meaning, by looking into the full semantic contents of related words. The task consists in collecting lexical sets, the study of their semantic features, the identification of their appropriate collocations, contextual limitations, and possible figurative uses. This paper will be of special interest to teachers who wish their learners’ discourse to gain in accuracy and lexical force.
