To cope with the increasing demands in the area of translation, developed countries have implemented machine translation (MT) programs in order to optimize the translator's work. Nevertheless, the absence of clear criteria to decide on the best translation method, whether human translation (HT) or MT, has posed obstacles to the ejjicient application of MT programs. This article aims at determining the criteria that the translator must take into account at the moment of facing a translation task. The analysis of these criteria will help the translator determine the best translation method (HTI MT) and thus optimize the time, cost and quality of his/her translation work
