Abstract

The object of this paper is to inform about the results of a comparative study conducted on a sample of four oral interviews on science topics and their corresponding written versions, published by the media. The corpus was analyzed both qualitative and quantitatively and the resulting data assessed according to the dimensions of field, tenor and mode postulated by Halliday (1985). Results show that the main strategies utilized by the journalist to reformulate the original oral discourse are those of omission, expansion and paraphrasis and that they affect ideational, interpersonal and textual meaning respectively
